Share the Love results

Hello again,

Just a quick write-up from the weekend. The Factory Girls notched up a win against Hills but lost their other three games in pretty foul conditions. Meanwhile, Fyshwick United beat off all comers to win the tournament in equally foul conditions (not surprising since everyone was at the same fields). Thanks to the volunteers and Paul for running the tournament and congrats to FU for winning Share the Love for the second year in a row.

It's a positive start for the season for both teams so I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Also, there's another exciting round of league tonight. In the Kaboom Premier League the round robin completes tonight so we'll get a good sense of how the league ladder is shaping up. No doubt Brett will let you know what happens. I'll be nursing my sunburn from Sunday.

See y'all tonight.

A recent open letter to the Mixed clubs/teams trying out for World Clubs

Hey everyone

I am writing to other mixed clubs/teams/captains to suggest another time-frame for qualifications if qualifications are required for our division.

So, some background information:

-AFDA is calling for EOIs for teams/clubs considering World Clubs by the 1st July
-Current plans are for qualifications to be carried out in February
-So far there are several cities that are considering mixed in various states of seriousness. ACT, WA, SA, Newcastle and Victoria/Melbourne are all possibilities and I have heard hugely sketchy reports of the chances of a sydney or a brisbane effort. Clearly things will become apparent in July.

I am suggesting co-locating the mixed qualifications with the late to post-mixed season period for a few reasons....

Qualifications in season will:

-Not require extra training out of season, when players will either be focusing on the single sex season or taking a break
-Be more representative of actual team strengths
-Give greater weight to the mixed season
-Give greater certainly for *some* of the clubs (as the amount of bids for Australian clubs is determined in February)

One possible disadvantage would be the need to organise teams/clubs earlier in the grand scheme of things. However this could also be a good means of testing whether teams/clubs will be committed or coordinated enough to represent.

Consider this idea, talk to your team mates and when July 1st ticks around we can make a decision based on the EOIs.

Summer League Round 4

Hi all,

Below is the results (up to and including round 4 of social and round 2 of KPL) for summer league.

In Div 3 the form teams are Revelation and Dynoshite, with Slipped Disc biting at their heels. Half way through the league it's looking like the eventual victors will be one of these three teams.

In Div 2 the High Flyers (I think they might have been re-named FRNU?) are streaking ahead of everybody, with the Beavers and the Bubs leading the resistance to the Flyer's plans for world domination.

As for KPL (Jonno avert your eyes now) it's looking like a three horse race. Hebs Team (good at ultimate, crap at team names) leads the field. However, Plan B and The Bookends are within striking distance. As for the No Ians title defence ....

Ok, I've done up a snappy little table in Word but Google won't seem to let me post this to the blog. So here's an abridged version (team name/points/total points for and against):

KPL

Hebs Team/4/+5
Plan B/2/+11
Bookends/2/+8
No Ians/0/-24

Div 2

High Flyers/8/+20
Dam Beavers/6/+9
Bubs n Suds/6/+4
Bananas/4/+8
Boffins/4/+3
Clap Attack/4/-14
BBC Ride the Llama/4/-16
Devolutionaries/2/+1
Bolivar Floaters/2/-5
Jailbait/0/-12

Div 3

Revelation/8/+26
Dynoshite/8/+13
Slipped Disc/6/+13
Gooni GooGoo/4/+6
Flighters/4/+1
Team UFO/4/-5
Beginner's Luck/2/-7
Saturated Velocity/2/-16
Hockey Girls/2/-19
Dickey Knees/0/-13

Stuff is happening!

Hi Ya'll,

I'm back from Chamonix and there are heaps of exciting things going on in the ACT frisbee scene which need some exposure.

1) Jane Andrew is running some juniors training sessions on Monday afternoons from 5:00 until 6:30 at Reid Playing fields (in Reid, near the War Memorial). They're loosely directed towards Youth Nationals but players of all standards are welcome regardless of their interest in Youth Nats (which is on on the 18th and 19th of April). If you're young and interested in learning some new skills with a bunch of other young folk then come along and have a go.

2) The Kaboom Premier League has started. It's being run by Brett Massey and the organisational juggernaut that is the ANU Disc Enthusiasts in 2009. The first game was last Tuesday and already the extra effort of the ACTUA committee and Brett in ensuring that the league is well organised and subscribed has paid off with some strong teams showing up for a good quality hit-out. Plan B have already painted a huge target on their foreheads as the team to beat this season but I suspect a strong challenge may come from a gritty and determined "Heb's Team" who clearly need a new name.

3) Share the Love is coming. The tournament season for the Open and Women's divisions is just about to start with a one day tourney in Sydney this coming Sunday. Fyshwick United and Factory Girls have both resumed full training duties and are looking forward to seeing how their early preparation pays off in tournament play. I'll keep you posted on the results one they happen.

4) The Brisbane Canberra Invitational (BCI) is also coming. It's a few weeks after Share the Love but if you're going to be in Canberra on the 28th of Feb and 1st of March head over to Giralang fields (I'm not sure where that is but I'll update once I find out) to watch the best Australian teams duking it out at the very FIRST BCI ever run. The 8 top Open and 6 top Women's teams from around Australia (including Sublime from Perth) will be here in Canberra to fine tune their offense and defense in the lead-up to nationals. If you want to see high quality ultimate head along and support your local teams, Fyshwick United and Factory Girls, as they reach for the bar stool in the bar-fight to end all frisbee bar-fights.

5) Uni is starting, which means the ANU is doing about a million things to get new recruits and build their club. There will be Monday lunchtime indoor competitions, demo games and market day stuff. I'll get more info from Pookie who is the grand high poobah of the ANU this year and let you know.

In case you're wondering, Chamonix was excellent. I was skiing for about 5 weeks and get a mix of snow conditions but there were a bunch of awesome powder days and the terrain is some of the best anywhere. Memorable moments include dropping into drifts of powder after skiing over crevasses, putting in fresh tracks in "one of the most dangerous areas in the Chamonix Valley" (according to the off-piste guidebook), skiing the Vallee Blanch twice and falling over again and again and again and again. It was great. Now I'm unemployed and broke. Philanthropists: Support me, I'm totally worth it.
