Trivia Night June 7th
Next week is the final week of Autumn League before everyone finally admits it's too cold and heads inside for Winter. What better way to celebrate the change in seasons (and the glorious acheivements of your team over the last few weeks) than to head along to the Kaboom Trivia Night. Apparently there will be audio and video rounds as well as the usual types of questions, so it promises to be good fun.
Place: Duntroon Golf Club
Date: 7th June
Time: 7:30pm for and 8pm start, finish up around 10-10:30
Cost: $10/head; Tables of 6-10 people each.
(Drinks will be available at the bar, about $3 a schooner I think?)
Email me (who dot is dot the dot schmooze at gmail got com) for more information or tickets.
So get your league team together to form a table and come along. It's a fund-raiser for Kaboom's trip to Europe to compete in the World Ultimate Club Championships and it's one of the only chances you'll get to see ACTUAL Kaboom players in the ACTUAL real world. There will be prizes. I don't know what they are. I'm sure they're nice though.

Two clubs in one weeked
Hi avid readers,
This weekend saw Canberra's two mixed clubs take to fields around the city. Although each club is at a very different stage in their journey it's a super exciting time for both clubs and well worth hearing about.
New Canberra club Soma started training on Sunday afternoon. It's great to see another club forming in the ACT. It'll give a much needed opportunity for local players to enjoy tournament ultimate and build and develop their skills. Unfortunately I couldn't make it along to their session but if anyone has any details they want to share it would be great to get a write-up to stick on the blog. Hopefully I'll get a chance to meet the crew and see how things are shaping up soon. Stay tuned for more details on this awesome development in the local scene.
Old Canberra club Kaboom had their second last training camp this weekend in preparation for the World Ultimate Club Championships in Prague in July. With the big event creeping ever closer Kaboom (minus local heart-thob Andrew Jackson and interstate weapon Michelle Philips who were at training camps for the national under 23s teams) had a strong weekend of high level and high intensity ultimate. Look out for an article (hopefully flattering) on Kaboom in that paragon of local reputable journalism "City News". There might even be some photos of somewhat dishevelled Kaboom players braving the cold nights at training last Thursday.
OK, my takeaway is no doubt ready so I'd better sign off. Keep an eye out for players from the local mixed scene at league or around the traps and stay tuned for more details on the exciting ultimate the ACT is producing.

Kaboom top Aussie seeds
Last weekend Sydney played host to the seeding tournament for the three Australian mixed teams heading to Prague in the Czech Republic later this year for the World Ultimate Club Championships. With the tournament numbers boosted by the arrival of two Kiwi teams looking for some match practice against international opponents and an innovative tournament format to fit into the very busy fields schedule in Sydney, each team prepared to play four games in under 24 hours in what became a feverish weekend of frisbee.
Local heartthrobs Kaboom played both the Kiwi teams on Saturday night (with games starting at 5:45 and finishing at 9:15) then played their seeding games against the two remaining Australian teams starting at 9:00 on Sunday morning.
First up, Kaboom took on Credo from Christchurch. With a few connections to the New Zealand ultimate scene on the team your heroes were able to get some smart defensive match-ups early in the game and limited Credo's preferred offense. Credo played a very balanced style of ultimate and looked to run much of their offense through their women. They were, however, no match for the excellent defensive technique of the Canberran ladies and some clinical offense from the Canberrans saw them run out the game with a final score of something like 15-7.
After just enough time to eat their prescribed number of muesli bars and enjoy the feeling of relaxation the Kaboom crew were back at the coalface again, this time squaring up against Duke from Wellington. Duke were clearly more accustomed to playing in the howling winds, driving rain and freezing conditions of their home town and were ill at ease in the still, mild conditions of Sydney. Despite some innovative throws and strong high grabs Duke couldn't keep up their intensity against Kaboom's team defense and hard running offense and your heroes ground out another 15-7ish win.
Within twelve hours of frantic driving, eating, sleeping and making jokes about who got to share a bed with AJ the Kaboom kids were back at the fields gearing up to play Adelaide's premier mixed team, Smurf. In what was later described as "a game of runs" Kaboom caught Smurf napping and got a few early breaks to lead 4-2. Smurf lifted their game and scored three in a row to take it to 5-4. Kaboom called a time out and came out with stifling defense and efficient offense to go on a ten point run, taking the game to 14-5. Smurf seemed to relax a little once the weight of expectation was over and started converting on offense while Kaboom developed a hilarious case of endzone drops and Smurf scored four more to reach 14-9. Finally, after three endzone drops in a point and some stifled laughter on the field Kaboom got serious and captain Max Wheeler pulled down a huck to seal the game at 15-9.
Finally, Kaboom matched up against Newcastle's Pie Wagon. With a few players missing from their roster the Novocastrians had 7 boys and 9 girls and started out the game playing 4 women on offense where possible. Again, the stifling defense of the Kaboom women eventually convinced them to try another approach and Kaboom took half 8-5ish after a late rally from Pie Wagon. After half Kaboom got another break and went up 10-6 before trading to a comfortable looking 12-8ish (something like that). Kaboom looked a little too comfortable and Pie Wagon changed to playing zone defense, normally something that the Canberrans play well against. This time, however, Kaboom was caught off guard by the late change up and Pie Wagon brought the game back to 13-12 Kaboom's way when time-cap went, making it a game to 14. An overcooked Kaboom hammer gave Pie Wagon the disc and their offense marched it down the field to score, making it 13 all, universe point. Kaboom received the pull and some quick movement lead to a huck to AJ deep. He caught the disc just outside the endzone and called time out. Kaboom set up in the endzone and an up-the-line dump cut from none other than Kaboom captain Max Wheeler for the final goal sealed the game and the number one Australian seeding for Kaboom.
Given the strong performances of Australian teams in the Mixed Division at World Clubs in 2006 Kaboom should be seeded roughly 10th, but these things are always a bit mysterious and unpredictable. We at the Canberra Ultimate Blog wish all three Aussie teams (and Credo and Duke from NZ) all the best for Prague in July. If you see a Kaboom player around, sporting their awesome red or yellow shirts, congratulate them and wish them well for the journey ahead. They are, after all, your heroes and mine.

The teams are fairly large. This is for three main reasons: 1) We want to test some methods of line-balance and 'time on field' management, 2) We want to assess a range of players in pressure games at tournaments. 3) These tournaments are not our end goal and are working towards ourgreater plan for Prague.
Thanks for everyone's continued efforts so far this season. Congratulations to those selected and if you missed out we encourage you to continue to come to training and improve your skills to take advantage of every future opportunity that Kaboom, Factory Girls and Fyshwick United will provide you.
If you have any questions for the selectors, please reply to this email and I'll pass those questions along.

Kaboom training squad announced!
Hi everyone,
Thanks to you all for your interest in the Kaboom training squad for Mixed Nationals this year. We have never run tryouts before so hopefully the sessions were as interesting to attend as they were to run.
Unfortunately, it became clear during the tryouts that we do not have sufficient interest to field two organised and trained Kaboom teams at Mixed Nationals this year. This has forced the Kaboom stewards to reduce the training squad to suit the one team that Kaboom will be able to send. Hopefully a pickup team will form to help fly the ACT flag in Hobart (the ACT has two slots so a pickup team would automatically qualify). It also made spots in the squad more competitive and difficult to get. The squad is still quite big but once the usual toll of injuries, work hassles and bankruptcies take their toll we will have a normal sized squad from which to select the team towards the end of the year.
With that in mind extra congratulations are due for the Kaboom 2009 Mixed Nationals squad:

Well done to everyone selected for the squad. Thanks again to everyone for braving the winter weather and heading along to the tryouts. Hopefully it was a worthwhile event for everyone and if you would like any individual feedback or more information about why you were or weren't selected please contact John or the rest of the leadership group at who.is.the.schmooze@gmail.com.
For those people who were not selected it was great to see you looking to improve your ultimate and we hope you get the chance to build up your skills once the ground unfreezes and regular ultimate resumes in Spring.

Kaboom training squad tryouts complete!
Well last night saw the 2nd and final evening of try-outs for the Kaboom training squad. Try-outs are now done and dusted and the leadership will be meeting on the weekend to determine who will get on to the training squad that will later form the two Kaboom teams heading to Hobart later this year.
The evening saw much more pleasant conditions than the previous week, with no wind or wet to challenge the players. We are pretty pleased with how the night went and are looking forward to what is to come.

Kaboom try-outs soon!
I'm just on posting this.
"Hi all,
In early July training will begin for the ACT mixed ultimate club, Kaboom. After the success of the Kaboom tilt at mixed nationals last year, this season marks the start of an exciting new phase for the club as we set our feet firmly on the path to the World Ultimate Club Championships in Prague in July of 2010. The current phase of training will be preparing two club teams for Mixed Nationals in Hobart in October and we invite you to join us on this stage of our journey.
If you would like the opportunity to train and play with the best players and coaches the ACT has to offer come along to tryouts on July 2nd and 9th (the first two Thursdays in July - venue TBA). If you're interested in playing for Kaboom at Mixed Nationals, want one of those ultra-cool yellow shirts or like the idea of getting some of the best ultimate training and coaching in Australia, this is your big chance.
We're looking to build a strong training squad for Mixed Nationals and these tryouts offer everyone a chance to strut their stuff and get some feedback on their game. These sessions will offer an opportunity for all competitive ultimate players in the ACT to test their mettle and examine their game through focused game, drill and benchmarking exercises. They may even be fun*!
We are looking for players with good athleticism, solid skills, a positive and focused training attitude, a willingness to commit to training and plenty of potential. If that sounds like you, or what you could be like with a bit of polish (that's the stuff you put on shoes and cars rather than the variety of salami) come along and see what all the Kaboom-based fuss is about. Email John at who.is.the.schmooze@gmail.com if you're interested in attending or want more information.
John and Pete, Kaboom Coaches

Mixed Nats Update
Howdy Folks,
Just a quick update on the results for the Kaboom teams at mixed nationals. The team captained by Dave Young and Alica Daly bottomed out at 24th, after improving all tournament, and they picked up the spirit prize. Woo!
The Kaboom team run by Pete and Carrie Flynn established a reputation for punching above their weight, eventually finishing up 14. They pulled out a massive 13-12 win over Townsville's "Hand of God" who had taken half 8-3. Nat Cheong and Andrew Jackson kept the offense moving in the mid-field and Matt Morrison was dominant in the air all weekend.
And Kaboom 1, captained by Pete Hemphill and Jess Preston made a point of fighting back in tough games, winning their three sunday games by a total of 5 points, including a 15-14 win over Faf from Sydney after being down 12-5. Unfortunately, Faf had the last laugh, edging them out in the semis. They finished third after an epic scissors-paper-rock bout with Spider-Pig from Sydney.
Vintage from Victoria stomped all over Faf in the final to win the tourney. Anyway, I'm going to bed so I'll write something more detailed later.

Off off and away in Brisbane!
As I speak Kaboom players will be touching down on the tarmac in Brisbane, preparing themselves for a fest of ultimate this weekend.
Last night we had our last training session and now the time to play has finally come! Such excitement.
Good luck to all the Canberra teams heading up to Brisbane and hopefully we can bring back something to show for our efforts.

Shirt?

Woo! Our Kaboom shirts have arrived in attractive yellow. I'm extremely excited, perhaps more than my restraining order allows. Everyone out there should offer a silent thought of thanks to Max for his splendid design.
We'll have to see about having some kind of "Come and get your shirt and meet everyone" thing some time.

Kaboom's Top Team Announced
My spies within local mixed club Kaboom have delivered the lastest roster for the ACT's top mixed team into my waiting hands. Kaboom plans to send three teams to Mixed Nationals this year, but some late pull-outs among their men have opened new spots in their roster. If you're a man and you're in Canberra and interested in attending mixed nats in October (18th-20th) contact me at who.is.the.schmooze at gmail.com and I'll pass your details on the relevant folk. This is the first time the ACT has taken a focused, club based approach towards the mixed division and it will be interesting to see what kinds of dividends this change brings. So, who will don papaya shirts in the name of destruction this October?
Larissa Arney,
Gareth Beyers,
Asher Gentle,
Laina Hall,
Mica Hartley,
Heather Hemphill,
Pete Hemphill,
Jonathan Holmes,
Ian McKerracher,
Keah Molomby,
Jess Preston,
Vicki Saye,
Heather Tolley,
Thomas Walcott,
Thomas Watson,
Max Wheeler,
These kids carry the hopes of at least 4 certified minors and will no doubt do their clubmates proud in Brisbane. If you see any of them around the traps congratulate them on their selection and wish them the best for the tournament ahead. I should have finalised rosters for Kaboom's other two teams once our final few players are confirmed.

Guest Coach this Thursday
If you're wondering what that whirring noise is, it's the local rumor mill. Yes, there's gossip aplenty floating around the frisbee scene, and the lastest publishable morsel regards the possibility of a guest star helping out at Kaboom training this Thursday. Pete Hemphill is away and his big shoes are set to be amply filled by Jonno "I once jumped over a guy who was jumping over another guy" Holmes.
Jonno has had a long and illustrious career in Australian ultimate. Reports abound about about his stellar performance in the garish yellow strips of Wanderlust, a mixed team that played at World Clubs in Perth in '02. He's been a stalwart of the Dingos for a few campaigns now, pioneered Deathstar's research into shopping trolley kinematics, invented the curvy bit at the bottom of the letter g and is the only player to have made an opponent weep and soil themself at the same time without crossing the fine line of incedental contact (Tao Brown has managed to simultaneously do the first and second, but never the third). So, if you're waiting for that spark to push you over the boundary from thinking about training to actually attending it, this could be your moment.

Kaboom Training
Hi All,
Kaboom, the ACT's new mixed ultimate club, starts training on the 21st of August (that's next Thursday) at 6:15 at the O'Connor playing fields, at the field nearest the O'Connor shops near the Pedder street car park. Coaches will be available from 6:00 to assist players with any questions or goals they may have and players are expected to be cleated up and ready to run at 6:15. Training will end by 9:00 (some sessions may end earlier).
Training is expected to stay at O'Connor until mid September but may move after that because of changes in the ACT Sportsgrounds' field allocations between the winter and summer booking periods.
All ACT players are welcome to attend training, but the standard of play and the expectations of players at the club level are quite different to those in other levels of ACT ultimate. If you're unsure about whether training is what you're looking for, you're most welcome to attend the introductory bridging session of the 14th of August (this Thursday) at 6:15 at the O'Connor fields (the same location as training on the 21st). This session will give players the basic skills needed to get the most out of club level training and will outline some of the differences you can expect. As outlined in our introductory message (http://canberraultimate.blogspot.com/2008/07/kaboom-mixed-act-ultimate.html) we hope to send three teams to tournaments this year and this season should provide opportunities for players of all levels to attend tournaments.
If you have any questions about attending training or about tournaments during the mixed season please email me at "who dot is dot the dot schmooze at gmail dot com".
All players who hope to play Mixed Nationals should attend training, as should players who are unable to attend tournaments but are looking to take a more focused approached to their ultimate. Sessions will be run by Pete "Mad Dog" Hemphill with assistance from John "Bags" Horan. Players interested in playing in the upcoming mixed season should register at http://www.afda.com/rego/showcompetition.php?competitionid=509.
I hope to see you all this (or next) Thursday.
John, on behalf of the Kaboom stewards, Tom Watson, Mica Hartley and John Horan.

Kaboom - Mixed ACT Ultimate
Its my pleasure to announce the formation of the ACT mixed club Kaboom.
We are looking to produce a more cohesive and organised effort during our mixed season this year. We hope this will be a longer standing mixed club that gives opportunities for all Canberrans to play for.
This campaign will be a building phase in our wider plan and will set our men's, women's and mixed teams up for 'great success' in the future. We are aiming at getting three mixed teams to tournaments and to qualify as many as possible for Mixed nationals. The teams will share style of play, training and administrative functions but will all have a different focus and goal for their campaign.
There will be a top level team, a competitive but more relaxed team and a development team. The top level team will be aiming to put itself into a position to win nationals and will play the smartest and cleanest ultimate in Brisbane. The 2nd team will be for those that want to have a good competitive tournament but also want to indulge in the more social aspects of the season. The development team will hopefully consist of players from the current Winter Outdoor League and previous div 2 leagues, with a core leadership of players that have played tournaments before. Its purpose is to expose new players to the tournament scene.
The campaign is effectively already under way. WOL and the development clinics on monday nights are new features of ACT ultimate that will prepare players for the mixed season. We are expecting to start training in mid August, giving us a ten week lead up to mixed nationals. This training will be run by Pete "Mad Dog" Hemphill with support from John Horan and conceptual guidance from G. Training will be held at O'Connor Playing Fields (the fields nearest the O'Connor Shops off Pedder Street) at 6:15 on Thursday nights, starting on the 21st of August (with an introductory bridging session held on the 14th). Details about selections and tournaments will be announced at a later date.
We are hoping that the merry batch of players heading off to Brisbane in October will all contribute to the improvement of Ultimate in the ACT and our eventual goal of qualifying for and winning World Clubs 2010 in the mixed division.
