One Week of WOL

Sunday brought the first week of the much blogged and emailed about Winter Outdoor League. Despite the late pullout of eight players from division three upstarts Dynoshite (a team trip to the football, no less) we managed to get 6 teams off the ground. It's never easy when roughly one third of your player base doesn't show up, and thanks to all the folk who made it easier by letting me know what weeks they'd miss in the comments section. For those few folks that just didn't turn up or for those that forsook the safety and security of signing up online in advance then made difficult demands, next time employ the wonder of the internets and make everyone's lives easier. We are, after all, volunteers. For those kind folk who turned up on the day and were helpful and accomodating thanks very much, you made everything run much more smoothly.

All six teams played two games, with the Pseudo-shite randoms pulling out two big wins over other strong teams in the league. The Mavericks and ANUDE also started strongly and had a great tussle in the second round, with the Mavs coming out on top. The Devolutionaires picked themselves up after a crushing loss to the Pseudo-shite kids to hand out a similar shellacking to the Bolivar Floaters, and the Dam Beavers went down in both games including a close loss to the ANU.

The teams are set for a shake up next week as Dynoshite lose most of their pickups to be replaced by their regular roster. Those pickups will be distributed across the other teams or, if things get really fruity, combined with some late-comers to form two new teams. As a word of advice to young players, next time a league starts and you want to enter a team, try to do so BEFORE the league starts rather than after.

Right now, the table stands at:

TeamWinsLossesDrawsPointsGoal Diff
Dynoshite200416
Mavericks200412
ANUDE1102-4
Devolutionaries1102-4
Dam Beavers0200-7
Bolivar Floaters0200-13

If I have managed to get this table to work I will be my own hero, at least for a little while.

Stay tuned for the possible arrival of division two stalwarts Schadenfreude and the High Flyers, it all depends on how many of them ever get around to signing up at http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=835.

  1. Can some kind, computer literate soul tell me why there is a huge gap between my text and my table? It doesn't show up in preview mode, only when the post is posted.

  4. Simon, apparently there's some setting on the blogger system which puts blank lines in all the time when you use html. I found some code on a website which temporarily turns that setting off. It was at http://roboticsforyou.blogspot.com/2008/02/posting-tables-blogger-removing-space.html

The goal diff is probaby off by one because I posted that at stupid o'clock.
